Mozarts Assemble

Mozarts Assemble

Looking back on days passed,
Beneath the feet of god’s decay,

Looking back on what I was,
Wishing for a new-found life,

Looking back on a three-piece game,
Each of me way back when,

Looking back at the gathered crowd,
Assemble each and everyone.

Higgar Tor – Bolehill Wood, Peak District

29 October 2017

This was one of our favourite walks from last year. I don’t like being asked which is my favourite walk in the Peak District, because I don’t think that we have done one yet that we have been disappointed by. But this particular walk had a bit of everything: wide open vistas, peaceful woodland, flowing streams, and a beautiful sunset to end the day with.

Moment of Worship

A moment of worship, Pune, India

The broken frame,
Beyond this life,
A silent prayer,
The bridge to beyond.

Along the frame,
The timber strong,
A peaceful moment,
Despair begone.

A reflection deep,
Echoed within,
Worshipped silence,
A moment gone

Three Shires Head, Peak District

8 October 2017

We picked up Rosie from Crewe railway station and then hurtled over to walk one of our favourite hikes in the Peak District.

ThreeShires-1

As always, we start at the chimney stack overlooking the valley with the River Dane running through it. The sheep was curious and patient, but not too bothered by our presence.

ThreeShires-2

Follow the river along the valley, taking care not to get stuck in the mud along the way, and eventually you arrive at one of our favourite picnic spots in the Peak District.

One town, One mile, One camera – Macclesfield

Back to my one-one-one project for this post. Macclesfield is the nearest big-ish town near us, and we often find ourselves there for one reason or another. On this occassion, we were there for the Treacle Market, on the last Sunday of every month. Traders are out selling their wares and the people are out to buy, but also to get in touch with their community. And this was a first real outing for my new X-Pro2.

Buskers and a town crier are as you’d expect in a market town.

Three days in Vienna

In September of 2017, we travelled to Vienna for a city break. Our daughter was about to go off to University and so we asked what she wanted to do before going, she said a city-break in Vienna.

Vienna-1

I had been to Vienna before, but it was many years ago when I was a student. I still carry many fond memories of those two weeks spent with my cousin, who was a student in Vienna at the time. But when you’re a young student, your agenda and timetable are a bit different to when you reach your middle ages! So we had different things in mind.

Wharfedale, Yorkshire Dales

1 June 2017

We spent a couple of great days with M&K hiking in the Yorkshire Dales. The first day we stayed quite local to the Landmark house we were staying in, and took in a circular walk from Yockenthwaite to Buckden, coming back along the River Wharfe.

The ViewRanger track of this (almost) 8 mile walk is at this link.

Wharfedale-1

The walk started with a climb uphill, a prerequisite to earn your sandwich, tea and cake.

Three days in Paris

Whenever I travel somewhere, I always take my camera with me and try to find the time to photograph. I then bring those images home and share my favourites with whoever is willing to look at them here on this blog. I don’t know if this is a common feeling, but I often have the same nagging thought – “did I capture the character of the place?” I always worry whether the images I present also convey the feeling of the place, the feeling that I had when I was there taking those photographs.

Paris-1

Back in March of this year, Mila and I had a special three days in Paris. The photographs in this blog (and in the video at the bottom of this post) go some way to record that wonderful time that we had. Not being a native Parisian, it’s hard for me to say whether even a small part of the essence of Paris did make it into these images.

Eyemouth to Burnmouth, Scottish Borders

13 March 2017

The day after Mike’s birthday, it was time to return home, but first a short (almost) 4-mile walk along the coastline between Eyemouth and Burnmouth. Buoyed as I was following the double-gold medal winning performance in the quiz the previous night (yes, I accept that it’s a team game!), we set off from the harbour at Eyemouth. The seals were out to give their congratulations.

Eye2Burn-1

The coastline is rugged in places, and we walked quite close the edge, but it just seems to be beautiful and eye-catching throughout.

Eye2Burn-3

Karen was multi-tasking – flying a kite and taking a phone call.

Eye2Burn-4

Open fields and a rugged coastline, and then sight of Burnmouth Bay with its village nestled within.

Eye2Burn-5

Boats in the harbour, and a sculpture, called Widows and Bairns, commemorating the widows and children who lost husbands and fathers in a fishing disaster, 135 years ago.

One town, One mile, One camera – Den Haag, The Netherlands

Earlier this year I was at a meeting in The Hague, or Den Haag, in the Netherlands. I took my x100s with me thinking that I might have the chance for some street photography while I was there. It was a busy two-day meeting, and I only had one chance to try and take some images of the streets in Den Haag (I like saying it the Dutch way!), and that was at the end of the meeting as I walked between the NWO offices, and the train station.

DenHaag-1

This was my first time in Den Haag, so I had no idea what to expect. But that just added to the experience. I had no expectations and I would just try to see what I could see in the streets as I walked through the town towards the station.

The pictures in this post are what I could find. A mixture of architecture both old and new, classical and avant garde, and one or two characters.
