milky way over mauna kea

The Astronomy Picture of the Day today shows an amazing astrophotograph of the Milky Way as seen from Haleakala on Maui. You can see our Galaxy arching triumphantly over Mauna Kea.

Also, note the tremendous amount of light pollution from Kailua, and the distant glows behind MK – Waimea and Hilo?

  1. From that angle the lights in front of MK would be Hawi and Kapa’au, with glow from Hilo to the left of the mountain and Kona and Waimea to the right. At least it looks to be mostly low pressure sodium light at 589nm.

  2. Hawi? Didn’t think it was so big? That’s what threw me, but as you say, from the angle it seems to be right. Hilo the faint glow over the shoulder of MK and Kailua and the airport to the right. From a purely aesthetic point of view, I like the way the street lights are reflected off the high cloud layer above Kona.
